Just because the sun is gone earlier, it doesn’t mean that you can’t have it on your plate! And this veggie/ vegan TOAST HAWAII FRENCH TOAST is definitely making the darker days much brighter.
Toast Hawaii is an old childhood-favourite of mine, that my mum sometimes made for me and my brother. The original version is made with Toast (obviously), ham, pineapple slices and cheese. While baking in the oven, the cheese nicely melts over everything. So you could basically say that it’s a deconstructed pizza Hawaii without the pizza base and the tomato sauce. Ok, close to.
However, not long ago I discorverd my love for this dish again, as I didn’t have it in a long while. Probably because I am vegetarian since high school? So I wanted to make a version that I can enjoy now as well.
About this Toast Hawaii French Toast
As good as Toast hawaii is on its own, the FRENCH TOAST part takes it to another level. And it’s also bonus for your budget and the environment, if you use old bread that’s already a bit dry- so nothing will have to go to waste.
I made two versions of this recipe: a vegetarian (even though I don’t eat any meat or dairy I occasionally enjoy some organic eggs) and a vegan one so everyone can give it a try. I have to admit that the texture for the vegan varieaty is a bit tricky to handle and I would reccomend to use a bit of oil/ (vegan) butter for frying, even if you use a non-stick pan. Maybe I’ll work out a way to improve this little issue, but for now I’ll leave it at that. It’s still delicious 😉
The ingredients for bit varieties are actually not super “special” and you can find them in every larger supermarket (at least where I live). Except maybe the black salt (kala namak) for the vegan variety, that gives it that “eggy” flavour.
Apart from that you’ll either need eggs, some plant milk and a little garlic powder. Or silken tofu, some nutritional yeast, a pinch of turmeric, garlic powder, onion powder and chickpea flour (which is also sold in most grocery stores nowadays). And of course (dairyfree) cheese, toastbread/ sourdough and pineapple slices.
Are you a pineapple-on-pizza lover?
I have to admit, I’ve always been a pineapple-on-pizza lover. There’s something so unique with combining sweet (fruity) things with savoury ones in my opinion. So I am sure, if you like pizza hawaii too, you’ll adore this way of eating french toast. Because yes, even savory french toast is a thing 😉

ALL THE BEST
Toast Hawaii French Toast
Ingredients
- 2 slices of your favourite bread/ toast (I used sourdough)
- 2 slices pineapple (fresh or from a can, preferably in its own juice)
- 2 slices (dairyfree) cheese
vegan version*
- 120 g silken tofu
- 1/4 cup (60ml) plantmilk (I used soy)
- 1 Tbsp (15g) chickpea flour
- 1/2 Tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 Tsp onion powder
- 1/2 Tbsp nutritional yeast
- pinch of turmeric (optional, for colour)
- pinch of black pepper (optional, but reccomende if you use the turmeric, for enhanced extraction of the curcumin)
- salt to taste
vegetarian version
- 2 (organic, pasture rasied) eggs
- pinch of garlic powder
- 2-3 Tbsp plantmilk
Instructions
- In a shallow bowl, mix ingredients for the the french toast batter together until well combined. Dip in bread slices and fry each slice on both sides in a non-stick pan until golden.
- Place one pineapple slice on each piece of bread. Top with cheese slices and bake in the oven at 200C for 5-10 minutes until the cheese is melted. You can also use the grillsetting, but then you should cut down the time to 3-5 minutes to make sure nothing gets burned (and DON'T use baking paper, as you might set your oven on fire).
- Garnish with herbs such as coriander or chieves and serve with your favourite dipping sauce or on it's own. Enjoy!
